A student of the Institute of Creative Industries Design at National Cheng Kung University, has designed the website for a new art and design publishing house in the UK, Rylett Press.

Huang Po-lun, a student of the Institute of Creative Industries Design at National Cheng Kung University, has designed the website for a new art and design publishing house in the UK, Rylett Press.

Rylett Press recently published the book Needham Pottery: The Ceramics of Mary and Godfrey Newcomb about the ceramics of important modern British artist Mary Newcomb (1922-2008) and her husband Godfrey (1921-2003). At the same time, they launched a new website and online order service, promoting independent artists, designers and makers.

Jamie Gilham, Co-Director and Publisher at Rylett Press, commented that the design of the website is a combination of creativity and the need to effectively showcase publications, and the designer has a good understanding of the important relationship between the website, the creative professions and independent publishing. Gilham said that he is also pleased to work with National Cheng Kung University again, having prevously collaborated on a website for the artist Harry Hambling (1902-1998), fatherof the celebrated international painter and sculptor, Maggi Hambling (b.1945).

The designer, Huang Po-lun, said that the latest web framework technology was used in this project, and the collaboration structure was very large, including several product pages and a complete purchase process. To complete this project, he not only needed to manage the time and communication with the client but also needed to overcome the challenges of new and rapidly developing technology.

Huang is supervised Professor Yen Ting-Cho, who has been involved in practical research for many years and studied at Harvard Graduate School of Design and the Royal College of Art in the UK. Through interaction with the real world, his students are able to temper their design knowledge and connect with industry.

Huang said that studying academic theories and working with a publisher, participating in the international art scene, and becoming familiar with new technologies used in the industry, are all valuable experiences that will inspire his thesis project.

Rylett Press, an independent London-based publisher, publishes books about artists, designers and makers from the early 20th century to the present, and is especially interested to document and promote creatives who have been neglected in the past.

Little-known for her ceramics, British artist Mary Newcomb is widely known for her paintings and drawings; her painting ‘People Walking amongst Small Sandhills’ is in the Tate collection in the UK. A major exhibition of her art is due to be held at Compton Verney Art Gallery, UK, between April and July 2021.
