2020 Tainan Museum Festival ‘On Everyday’: NCKU ICID’s New Reinterpretation of Daily Living in the Archaeological History of Tainan

Responding to the 518 International Museum Day, the Tainan City Government has been organising Tainan Museum Month since 2011, and subsequently in 2017this became the Museum Festival. In 2020, the fourth Tainan Museum Festival is working in cooperation with five universities, selected through an open-call competition. Among the five, a partnership between the Institute of Creative Industries Design of National Cheng Kung University (ICID, NCKU) and the Museum of Archaeology, Tainan Branch of National Museum of Prehistory, has co-curated a unique exhibition ‘On Everyday’, held at the museum. This exhibition aims to imagine cultural relics in the present day, thereby creating a dialogue between prehistorical artefacts and objects of the present day.

Supervised by Associate Professor, Ming Turner, from ICID, the curatorial team for ‘On Everyday’ includes four MA students also from ICID, Tenja Hsiao-Ling Huang, Amber Yi-Ning Li, Marina Yi-Chun Shen, and Huai-Jen Wu. The project began on 19th May and will be on display at the Museum until 16th June. The exhibition welcomes everyone to visit and to participate in a variety of educational activities and workshops.

The concept of connecting utensils, daily scenes, and lifestyles of the past and the present has been developed by the curatorial team. They have attempted to interpret the ancient Taiwanese lifestyle from a new perspective, through utilising a ‘pixel’ art style to visualise contemporary scenes by inputting items from the collection of cultural relics in the Museum. The team hopes that this interesting juxtaposition between contemporary digital imagery and ancient objects and culture, narrows the gap between the general public and prehistorical knowledge.
In addition, there will be two workshops organised specially for this exhibition. The first is a cyanotype workshop, while the second will lead participants to create sketches on archaeological objects. The idea behind organising these events is that they will encourage participants, through their creative engagement, to explore the beauty of daily objects.
