Innovation in Cultural and Creative Industries

Abstract

This chapter aims to investigate the role of innovation in the development of cultural and creative industries (CCI) and apply research findings on culture and creativity studies to this innovation. The status of the CCI development in rapid emerging and facing radical challenges and the trends. We developed a dual mechanism of innovation for developing CCI from research on culture and creativity, and applied to help the CCI overcome its challenges and steer in the future trends.

 

The chapter in structured as follows. First, the development and historical evolution of various countries’ CCI will be introduced, together with the challenges they currently encounter, as well as new opportunities available in future development trends. Second, as shown in Figure 1, drawing on research on culture and creativity and practical successful cases in CCI, we developed dual mechanism of innovation for developing CCI. The dual mechanism comprised of the reciprocal process between culture and creativity, as well as innovation mechanism on multicultural convergence, derived from which we proposed eight major propositions for solving the challenges and grasping the opportunities in the trends. Last, we identify future issues for future development in both practice and theory implicated in CCI innovation development.
