YEN TING CHO Patterns Commissioned for the 2022 Matsu Biennial

Author|YEN TING CHO Studio

‘Matsu Fog’ and ‘Four Seasons of Matsu’ revealed on the opening day of the Matsu Biennial, integrating the colorful nature and identity of the islands

The inaugural Matsu Biennial is held from February 12 through April 10, 2022. Yen-Ting Cho, National Cheng Kung University Associate Professor of the Institute of the Creative Industries Design, led Tzu-Chin Huang, a student of the Department of Architecture, and a team from YEN TING CHO Studio to design two scarf patterns for the Matsu Biennial. The two patterns, ‘Matsu Fog’ and ‘Four Seasons of Matsu’, present Matsu’s rich natural landscape and cultural heritage. Created using human-computer interaction, the patterns are digitally-printed onto luxurious wool-cashmere-silk material. Correcting the general impression of Matsu as a site of confict and battle, the patterns promote Matsu’s natural beauty and culture; and they bring a lively and fashionable style to the 2022 Matsu Biennial.

‘Matsu Fog’ is inspired by the traditional Matsu village of Qinbi, famous for its old stone and tiled houses perched on the sides of mountains and defiantly facing the ocean. The warm orange masonry of the historic buildings meld with the grey and blue tones of the foggy sea and sky to create a highly refined and elegant pattern.

‘Four Seasons of Matsu’ is inspired by the refracted colours of the sun as it battles with the wispy fog that sweeps across the Matsu islands in spring and summer. Bronze orange, sky blue, gleaming turquoise and deep midnight black reflect the misty historic landscape, rugged coastline and the unpredictable movement of the mighty ocean.

‘Matsu Fog’ and ‘Four Seasons of Matsu’, will also be exhibited at COTERIE New York, the largest premium trade event for women’s contemporary apparel in the United States, between February 27 and March 1, 2022.

According to Yen-Ting Cho, ‘Matsu Fog’ and ‘Four Seasons of Matsu’ are the collective work of people from the Department of Architecture, Industrial Design, the Institute of the Creative Industries Design, and Techno Art, NCKU. Providing students with the opportunity and environment to participate in the process of R&D, design, manufacturing and marketing, the theory learned during the class was put into practice, and connect with the industry and international standards. In the process of close team working and collaboration, interacting with real-world problems and needs, gaining feedback from the market and discovering new knowledge which could not be found in books is the advantage of practical research, and such a new type, of course, is also supported and affirmed by the university.
